French renewable power producer and developer, Akuo, has officially inaugurated a 1.2-MW solar park featuring an integrated energy storage facility on the island of Mayotte in the Indian Ocean. The Hamaha photovoltaic (PV) plant is positioned to contribute to Mayotte's ambitious target of adding 60 MW of renewable energy capacity by 2028, augmenting the existing 25 MW already installed, according to Akuo's announcement on Tuesday.
Constructed on the site of a former landfill, the solar plant is designed to provide electricity to nearly 17,000 inhabitants of the island and offset approximately 1,100 tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions annually. Equipped with a 3.5 MWh lithium-ion battery energy storage system, the plant offers a three-hour discharge capacity, injecting power into the grid during peak demand periods.
Secured through a French government tender for solar capacity in non-interconnected zones (ZNI), the project's implementation was overseen by French industrial group Sagemcom.
Akuo, with 1.7 GW of renewables capacity currently in operation and under construction, along with an additional 20 GW of projects in the pipeline, underscores its commitment to advancing sustainable energy solutions. The Hamaha PV plant represents a notable stride in the pursuit of cleaner energy in the region, aligning with broader global efforts to foster renewable power generation.
