Norwegian oil and gas group Equinor's solar developer, BeGreen, is set to make its foray into the German renewable energy market with the establishment of a local office in Berlin. The Utrecht, Netherlands-based BeGreen, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Equinor, announced on Monday its intention to open the Berlin office in the coming months, signaling a strategic move to bolster its operations in Germany.
Lars Josten, a seasoned professional in the solar industry and former CEO of German engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) firm Pfalzsolar GmbH, will lead the German operations for BeGreen. The expansion into Germany is viewed as a crucial element in BeGreen's broader business strategy and is deemed “an important building block” in Equinor's renewable energy portfolio, particularly in Northern Europe.
Equinor, having agreed to acquire BeGreen in November 2022, already boasts an extensive project pipeline exceeding 6 GW in Denmark, Sweden, and Poland. The move into the German market aligns with BeGreen's commitment to developing, building, and operating 1 GWp of capacity annually by the end of 2025.
Nina Scholz, Equinor's Country Manager for Germany, welcomed BeGreen's expansion plans, stating, “We welcome BeGreen's plans to expand to Germany to further strengthen the pipeline of large-scale solar projects. This is in line with Equinor's position as a trusted and reliable energy and decarbonization partner for Germany.” The initiative underscores Equinor's strategic vision to play a significant role in Germany's transition to renewable energy sources.
