Offshore installation and services company Cadeler has finalized the sale of both cranes from Wind Orca and Wind Osprey to Hapo International Barges, marking a notable move towards sustainable practices in the industry. The sale is part of Cadeler's commitment to circularity, providing the cranes with a second life for continued heavy load lifting.
Cadeler's CEO, Mikkel Gleerup, expressed enthusiasm about the mutually beneficial deal, stating, “The sale is one of those absolute win-win situations for both parties. As far as we're informed, this is the first time cranes from a wind turbine installation vessel are being sold to fulfill a meaningful second life—a solution that is in line with our target to place greater focus on circularity.”
The cranes, which have served aboard Cadeler's Wind Orca and Wind Osprey for a decade, will be removed as both vessels undergo a parallel crane update in Rotterdam to meet the surging demand for the transport and installation of next-generation wind turbines.
Hapo International Barges, known for its specialization in providing heavy lift capacity, pontoons, and crane barges globally, will retrofit the cranes to shallow water barges. The retrofitting process is anticipated to span approximately 9-12 months, allowing the cranes to continue their operational lifespan in a new capacity.
The move underscores a strategic shift towards sustainable practices within the offshore industry, repurposing equipment and contributing to the industry's efforts to minimize waste and extend the life of valuable assets.
