South African chemicals and energy company Sasol Ltd and French industrial gas supplier Air Liquide have entered into a power purchase agreement (PPA) with Mainstream Renewable Power for 97.5 megawatts (MW) of renewable power from a forthcoming solar park in South Africa.
As part of the agreement, Mainstream will establish a local entity to construct the solar farm located in the Free State province, with the site expected to be operational by 2025.
This marks the third PPA between Sasol and Air Liquide to secure renewable electricity for Sasol's Secunda site, home to Air Liquide's oxygen production facility, recognized as the world's largest of its kind. The combined PPAs, including agreements with Enel Green Power (EGP) and TotalEnergies SE in collaboration with Mulilo, account for approximately 580 MW of renewable power for the Secunda site.
Air Liquide, in a press release, emphasized that these PPAs are pivotal in achieving their goal of reducing carbon dioxide emissions at the Secunda site by 30% to 40% by 2031.
