Wind 2 unveils plans for a 72MW wind farm in the Ochil Hills in central Scotland that could power 40,000 homes and save over 56,000 tonnes of carbon emissions per year. The proposed Windburn site would comprise 15 turbines, each with a tip height of up to 150 metres.
Wind 2 aims to submit a planning application for the project in late 2023 and will soon begin the formal process of community consultation. The company expects to distribute £360,000 each year, through a dedicated community fund, based on the 72MW capacity. This would amount to a total of £10.8m throughout the project's lifetime.
Project manager Ryan Bissoonauth explains that the Windburn Wind Farm project is at an early stage, and the company will be refining the plans over the coming months in consultation with the local community. Wind 2 aims to create opportunities for the community to benefit from the project, including through community share ownership and reduced electricity tariffs.
Windburn Wind Farm is a joint venture between Wind 2 and companies managed by Octopus Energy Generation. The formal community consultation plans will be announced soon, and formal representations can be made once the planning application is submitted to the Energy Consents Unit.
The proposed wind farm is part of the UK's push towards renewable energy, and the government has set a target to generate 40GW of offshore wind energy by 2030. The Windburn project would contribute significantly to achieving this target while providing a source of green energy for the local community.
