Austrian energy company OMV AG has unveiled a strategic partnership with local utility Wien Energie to develop deep geothermal plants with a combined capacity of up to 200 MW. The joint venture, known as “deeep,” is set to make an initial investment of approximately €20 million (around USD 21.4 million) in these facilities, aimed at providing climate-neutral district heating for as many as 200,000 households in Vienna.
The first project undertaken by deeep is slated for the Aspern area, with an estimated output of up to 20 MW of district heating, capable of serving around 20,000 households in Vienna. The initiative is presently undergoing approval procedures, and drilling activities are scheduled to commence towards the end of 2024, with the facility expected to become operational in 2027. Overall, the collaborative effort aims to establish as many as seven deep geothermal plants in the Donaustadt and Simmering districts.
These projects align with OMV's broader strategy to reduce its carbon dioxide emissions, involving a planned investment of €5 billion by 2030. OMV recently fortified its geothermal capabilities by injecting €34 million into Canadian firm Eavor Technologies in June.
The establishment of deeep underscores the commitment of OMV and Wien Energie to play a crucial role in advancing sustainable energy solutions and expanding the application of geothermal technology to provide clean and efficient heating options for Vienna's residents.
